What Is a Harness?

The difference between an AI you supervise at every step and one you can hand a job to — and walk away.

Most “AI Use” Is Just Supervision

Ask around and almost everyone says they use AI. Watch them work and you see something else: a conversation. Ask, read, correct, wait, correct again. That is not delegation — it is supervision with extra steps. Iterate’s engineering team sees the split plainly: most developers say they use AI, but only a fraction ever hand it a whole job and let it run.

A harness is what closes that gap. It is the standards, checks, and sign-off gates wired around a model so you can give it a task and trust the result without hovering. Picture a capable new hire. On day one you check every line. Once they know your standards, your review steps, and when to ask, you hand them a project and get a finished one back. A harness is that onboarding — written down, and enforced — for an AI. Put plainly: a chatbot is a model you supervise; an agent is a model running inside a harness, so it works on its own. Six parts turn a chatbot into a worker

A harness is not a product you buy. It is a pattern — six pieces wired around the model that together let you delegate instead of supervise.

Guides
The standards you set up front — house style, which tools the AI may touch, safe sandboxes to work in. Without guides it cannot know how you like things done.
Sensors
What the AI does after each step on its own — reformat a file, run a review, validate the work — so it catches its own mistakes before you ever see them.
Hooks
Checks fired at three moments: before it acts (scan for secrets before a push), after each step (format after writing a file), and a final stop gate that will not return the work until every test passes.
Skills
Saved playbooks for jobs done again and again, read only when needed. The AI knows your recurring procedures without you re-explaining them — and without clogging its memory.
Context
Giving the AI the right information for the task, not everything at once — the way you brief a new hire on what matters for this job, so it stays fast and on-point.
Worktrees
Separate workspaces that let the AI run several jobs at once. Because each job is isolated, one person can oversee many — Iterate’s team runs up to eight in parallel.
