Old computer systems just follow orders. AI remembers, thinks, and learns instead — and that changes who should be in charge of it.
Old IT is like a calculator. It computes exactly what you type, nothing more. It does not remember yesterday's problem, does not understand why you are asking, and never gets better at math. AI is like a person using that calculator. It remembers what you asked before (memory). It works out what you are really trying to solve (reasoning). And it gets better the more you use it (learning).

Managing Data: For leaders outside IT, this changes the rules of information. When technology only searched and retrieved, information was a filing problem — keep it accurate and findable. Once a system remembers and learns, every document, thread, quote and complaint you feed it becomes training material for the answers your team acts on tomorrow. Messy or outdated records no longer just slow people down; they teach the system the wrong lessons, and those come back as confident, well-worded advice.
Managing People: It also changes how you manage people and digital assets. Because AI reasons rather than executes, reviewing and signing off on machine output becomes ordinary work, not an IT ticket. And because that memory holds real commercial value — your pricing logic, customer history, operational know-how — where it lives is a business decision. Every leader should be able to answer three questions about the tools their team uses: what is it learning from us, where does that learning live, and who else can see it.
Here is the difference that trips people up. Old IT is deterministic: the same input always gives the same output, every time, forever. AI is probabilistic: it predicts the likeliest good answer, so the same question can come back worded differently.

You cannot check one right answer and move on. You judge whether answers are consistently good, the way you would judge a person's work.
Nobody owns a calculator's memory, because it has none. AI accumulates one — so somebody owns it. Decide who before you deploy.
IT teams keep systems running. AI also needs someone accountable for what it learns and where that learning goes.
